Heckel chose the human form as a subject for the limitless ways in which it illicits complex emotions in both the artist and the observer. Strength, vulnerability, comfort, confidence, pleasure and a myriad of emotions that are instictively recognized. The female form is of universal interest to man and few subjects are more challenging for an artist.
Sculpture's unique multi-dimensional nature begs an extended sensual adventure to be explored by both touch and sight. One can live and feel the tension, bones, muscles and textures while experiencing all the nuances of shifting views and light.
Black and White images are surrealistic, not at all like the color we experience in nature. They must be viewed with a different mind set. Subtle variances in shapes, forms, density, contrasts and composition strengthen our understanding.
